Makar Sankranti – One festival, Many Forms.
Makar Sankranti is on 14th of January every year. It is a very auspicious day.
On this day the sun enters the Uttarayan Uttar means north and ayan means sun. So Makar Sankranti is the northward movement of the sun.
This wards of Evil phases, brings health and prosperity. This day marks the rise of heat, light and intensity of the Sun which supports life on earth.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different forms throughout India. In North India, people take dip in the holy river of Ganga and other pious rivers.
In Punjab and Haryana, day before Sankranti is celebrated as LOHRI.
In Assam it is celebrated as Bihu, a harvest festival. In Tamilnadu this is a three-day festival of Pongal. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka this is celebrated as a harvest festival.
In Maharashtra people give sesame seeds and jaggery to each other on this day.
